When we get into something around here, we REALLY get into it. Our normal obsession with the Curious George where he goes down into the basement (or goes into the cave to get his ball… or gets lost in the city and has to hear his way home) has been (thankfully) taking a backseat to Peter and the Wolf lately. Today we listened to it on repeat.
She gets lost in the story and the music. She loves telling me what is happening (and who is doing it) when she hears the different musical themes. We have two different books of Peter and the Wolf and I picked up a third at the library tonight. She likes to turn the page to match whatever music is playing. This makes this musical mama very, very happy.
But I have been also trying to balance talking about how wolves aren’t mean like you so often see in stories. The other day she wanted to pretend Peter and the Wolf. Mimi is a “good marchin’ girl” so Mimi was going to be Peter leading everyone to the zoo at the end of the story. Then on second thought, Jo said that she is a pretty “good marchin’ girl, too” so perhaps she could be Peter until Mimi “comes home” and Jack could be the wolf! I asked her how she would feel about tying her brother up to take to the zoo. This question caused a meltdown because she didn’t like the idea of tying up her brother and wanted to stop pretending Peter and the Wolf immediately. While I was sorry that she got upset, I did like that she thought about what happened to the wolf in a different way. Now she talks about the friendly wolf. 🙂
There is a short Peter and the Wolf on Netflix that we have watched that is pretty good. And we are collecting all kinds of recordings. We normally listen to the Boris Karloff recording just because it is on Spotify. But we also have Patrick Stewart, Eleanor Roosevelt, David Bowie, Christopher Lee, and Alec Guinness. I am thinking of recording it reading in my best Katharine Hepburn voice. 😛
Today we talked about all of the differences she has noticed between all of the different versions we have watched, read, or listened to. The cat in this one is orange. The bird in this one is black. The grandfather in this one has a beard. She amazes me with all that she absorbs.
